Maronite History

St. Maroun

Renowned during his lifetime for his piety and zeal, St. Maroun lived the life of a monk and hermit in Antioch. As word of his saintly life spread, the Catholic faithful in that part of the world gathered around him and eventually became known as Maronites. When St. Maroun died in 410 A.D., his followers continued their struggles in defense of the Church at a time in history when the Catholic faith was under siege by heretics and schismatics. In 517 A.D., 350 Maronite monks were martyered defending the decrees of the Council of Chalcedon.

As a Christian island in a sea of non-believers, the story of the Maronites is a story of constant struggle and persecution to maintain their Catholic faith.
